I have been exposed to homemade food all my life. The most important lesson while growing up in a typical Italian family was to make as much as possible from scratch. Ordering out any kind of food, or buying ready meals didn’t even cross our mind. Yes, things did change a little after I moved out. There wasn’t mamma anymore preparing the food. After a long day out at work I didn’t feel like spending hours in the kitchen. That was the time that I started ‘discovering’ some of those things I had never considered buying before. And as bad as this might sound, I’m not even talking about pasta in a can… Yikes! Basically I bought once in a while a microwave meal for lunch at work here…a frozen pizza for the evenings there..
The ‘wake-up call’ came shortly after. I had never really paid a lot of attention to the ingredient’s label on the products. One day though, I was holding a package of ricotta cheese in my hands, of a brand I had never heard of before. The list of ingredients was endless! I put it right back on the shelf and decided to make the ricotta myself from that day on. And more and more homemade food followed..
It turns out that a lot of things are really not hard to make as we might have initially thought! The homemade label alone is so rewarding. It can’t be fresher, and on top you know what’s in there. Isn’t that alone worth the effort?
I would be lying if I said that it isn’t tempting at times to buy certain things at the grocery store instead of making them at home. Especially when we talk about those things that look intimidating to re-make. Like this ricotta cheese.
